SUNDERLAND: Martin O’Neill is ready to replace Steve Bruce as Sunderland boss.

The former Aston Villa boss is a firm front-runner to take charge of the club he supported as a boy.

Bruce was axed yesterday morning after two and a half years, with owner and chairman Ellis Short telling him that results were “simply not good enough".

Short took the decision late on Tuesday night but slept on it before Bruce was summoned and given the news.
