SYDNEY: Australia's immigration minister said Thursday he wants to see a big rise in the number of refugees the country takes while making clear illegal boatpeople should be sent back to their transit countries.
Chris Bowen plans to propose at the Labour Party's national conference starting Friday that Australia boosts its resettlement of refugees each year from 13,750 to 20,000.
"I have had the view for some time that we could and should take more refugees," he told ABC radio.
